History of the Astoria Hotel in Saint Petersburg

The hotel was built in the early 20th century on the site of the mansion of Prince A. Lviv. The plot with the house was purchased by the English joint-stock company "Palace Hotel" with the intention to build a good hotel with luxury rooms on this site.

The building was built between 1908 and 1912. The project was designed by the famous Russian-Swedish architect Fyodor Lidval, who developed the style of the hotel based on Art Nouveau, as well as influenced by neoclassical architecture. The developer was the German firm "Wais and Freitag".

The name "Astoria" was given to the hotel in memory of the fashionable New York hotels owned by the Astors' cousins, one of whom, a few months before the hotel opened in St. Petersburg, died on the Titanic, giving women a place in a lifeboat. The first director of the hotel was the Frenchman Louis Theriere.

The Astoria Hotel, which opened on December 23, 1912, immediately became a city landmark and gained popularity among celebrities, among whom the dancer Isadora Duncan and the poet Sergei Yesenin stayed at the hotel.

Since March 1916, Astoria was a military hotel ("Petrograd Military Hotel"), which housed officers of the highest command.

During the revolutionary actions of 1917, the hotel was in the center of events and it, like the nearby Winter Palace, was taken by storm.

During the Great Patriotic War, in 1941, a hospital was located in Astoria, where the remaining writers, artists and musicians were treated.

The hotel is currently owned by Rocco Forte Hotels, which owns five-star luxury hotels and resorts around the world.
