Small Square, Prague (Male naměstí) - pleasant place in the Old Town of Prague

Small Square (Malé náměstí) is a small but pleasant square in Prague, surrounded by bright historical buildings.

The small Square is located in the heart of the historical part of Prague, in the Old Town (Stare Mesto) and in close proximity to the famous Old Town Square (Staroměstske naměstí).

The Small Square is one of the oldest squares in Prague and has been known since the Middle Ages.

The settlement of merchants from French lands was founded in this place in Roman times. Then the square lay outside the Old City itself.

During the history of the Small Square served as a market square. It lost its ancient appearance at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, when the residential buildings around the square were rebuilt in their current form.

Through a small area passes the former The Royal Way leading from the Old Town to Prague Castle.

Today, this small square serves as an extension of the Old Town Square.

The perimeter of the square is decorated with colorful buildings of different stylistic shapes, some of which now house shops, cafes and restaurants with outdoor tables, as well as accommodation facilities (hotels, apartments)

In the center of the square there is an old well-fountain of the 16th century, fenced with a lattice. This fountain is the oldest one preserved in Prague. The date 1560 is indicated on the grid on the south side. The marble base supports a decorative wrought iron lattice of the Renaissance with carved decoration. The edges are decorated with figures of angels, and the lattice is crowned with a ball with a gilded Czech lion, which were added in the 17th century.

From the houses around the Small area stands outRottov house or Rotta house (Rottów dówm, Dówm U Rotta), having a neo-Renaissance facade, painted according to the cartons of Mikoláš Alš.

The house was built in 1896-1897, on the site of an old house from the beginning of the 15th century, after it was acquired by a company founded by Vincent Rott. The building was built in the Neo-Renaissance style and became a department store with a trading hall and warehouses in the basement.

The facade of the building is decorated with floral motifs and paintings with allegories of crafts and agriculture. The lunettes depict implements and tools. Between the second and third floors there is a large inscription "VJ Rott", and between the third and fourth - an inscription made in a smaller font.

The square is also decorated with other significant buildings with beautiful names, including: the House of the Golden Horn (Dům U Zlatého rohu), which is adjacent to the house At the Minute (Dům U Minuty), facing the Old Town Square; the Richter House (Richtrův dům), the house of the White Lion (Dům U Bílého lva), the house of the Golden Eagle (Dům U Zlatého orla), the house of the Yellow Statue (Dům U Žluté sochy), the house of the Angel (Dům U Anděla), etc.
