Major square (Catalan title: Plaça Major), which means "big square" - the main and one of the most popular areas of Palma de Mallorca.
The Plaza Mayor is located in the center of Palma and close to other important attractions of the city such as the Main theatre, St. Michael's Church, the house can Forteza Rey and the building of El Aguila, city hall (town hall), the Church of St. Eulalia , etc.
The current Plaza Mayor is the former convent of Saint Felipe Neri and some of the neighboring houses.
Until 1823, the square was the seat of the Inquisition. After the demolition of the headquarters of the Inquisition, ten years later, work started on creation of the square, which gradually continued up to the twentieth century.
The current Plaza Mayor is rectangular in shape. The perimeter of the area located 3 - and 4-story building with porches on the first floors of covered galleries, supported by columns.
