The building of the hospital of St. George in Kaliningrad

The St. George Hospital building is an architectural and historical monument in Kaliningrad.

It is included in the list of sights of the city and has the status of a cultural heritage site of regional significance.

St. George's Hospital was founded by the master of the Teutonic Order Werner von Orzel in 1329. The first Hospital building (then a leprosarium) was located in the suburbs of Altstadt - one of the cities that later became part of Konigsberg. In 1531, the leprosarium was abolished and the Hospital became an orphanage-monastery for the elderly.

In 1433, 1520, 1550 and 1775, the Hospital buildings were destroyed by fires, but were always restored again. Over time, the purpose of the Hospital changed, and it turned from a monastery for the elderly into a medical institution and a guardianship authority.

There was a school at St. George's Hospital, where Immanuel Kant studied in 1730-1732. The hospital existed until 1945.

The construction of the new St. George's Hospital building began in 1894 by Master Worms, and was inaugurated in 1897.

The hospital consisted of several buildings connected in a regular quadrangle.

The building is made of red clinker brick in the Neo-Gothic style.

Today, the Kaliningrad Marine Fisheries College is located within the walls of the former hospital.

The main entrance to the current college looks quite impressive. This is due to the sloping facade, decorated on both sides with high towers with sharp spires and a strict Gothic portal (entrance).
