Müller height (Steep dune), Curonian Spit

The Muller Height is one of the natural attractions of the Curonian Spit (Kaliningrad Region, Russia).

The Muller height is the highest point of the "Steep" dune (or Marsh dune, German name: Bruchberg) of the Curonian Spit, where the observation deck is located.

Muller's height is not a dune. The Muller height is the highest point of the Bolotnaya dune. The height was named "Muller" in honor of the forester of the Konigsberg Forest Management Ludwig Muller, who studied forest soils and introduced a new method of forest planting, which allowed fixing moving sands. The method itself was implemented by the dune inspector Franz Efa, after whom another height is named on the Curonian Spit - the height of Efa. Since the 17th century, the Bruchberg dune has been moving towards the village of Rossitten (now the village of Rybachy of the Curonian Spit) and was stopped by forest planting in 1882.

The Bolotnaya dune is the largest of those located near the village of Rybachy.

The height of the Muller is a public ecological trail (hiking route), with a length of 2 kilometers, which runs along the part of the Curonian Spit - on the 32.1 kilometer of the spit, near the village of Rybachy.

The height of the Muller is located in the direction of the Baltic Sea from the road 27A-015 (to the left of the road, if you move from Zelenogradsk). There will be an information sign on the road.

There is a parking lot near the beginning of the route, there are information stands.

The route passes through the wet alder at the foot and along the slope of the Steep dune. This area is the oldest part of the Curonian Spit - the island of glacial origin Rasite, which served as the basis for the formation of the sandy body of the peninsula.

The beginning of the route passes along a fairly flat and wide path, on both sides of which there are tall firs and pines of various species, many of which are more than 100 years old. Then the ascent becomes steeper and soon it is equipped with a wooden staircase with a railing, at the very end the route again runs along a fairly flat path.

You can also go to the observation deck along the second section of the route, which is less steep and is not equipped with a wooden staircase.

At the highest point of the route, on the top of the Steep dune, at an altitude of 44.4 meters above sea level, there is an observation deck.

From the observation deck of the Muller Height, you can enjoy panoramic views of the forests of the spit, the Baltic Sea, the Curonian Lagoon, Lake Chaika (German name: Meyvenbruch-Seagull Swamp) and the village of Rybachy located on the lake shore.

At the foot of the observation deck there is a massive granite boulder, on the hewn surface of which is stamped in German: "Muller Height, 1882".

This stone was installed both in memory of the day of the end of the persistent five - year work on fixing the dangerous mobile dune, and as a tribute to the recognition of the special merits of the chief forester-Muller.

Ludwig Muller lived in Konigsberg (now the city of Kaliningrad) and is considered the founder of dune forestry, since he introduced the method of planting seedlings with a lump of earth, that is, with a closed root system. This method made it possible to significantly increase the efficiency and reduce the time of work on fixing moving dune sands.
