Mergellina harbour, the full name of Mergellina harbour and Sant Nazzaro or the harbour of St. Nazzaro (Nazzaro and Saint Mergellina Harbour) is a small seaport (Marina, pier) located in the Central part of the coast of Naples, at the foot of the hill of Posillipo, 2.5 miles West along the coast from Castel Dell'ovo.
Mergellina port is the most picturesque Harbor of Naples. And the waterfront along the port promenade and the pier - one of the most popular places for walking and recreation as among local residents so among city guests.
Historically it was a small fishing village with a port which operates independently from the city of Naples. From the 17th century when Naples began to grow and transform, Mergellina became part of Naples, thereby extending the Western border of the coast of the city.
According to one version, the name "Mergellina", the port got the name from the bird "mergoglino", living in this area. Other people have the opinion that the name came from the distortion of the expression "the Yellow sea" ("Mare Giallo") related to the case, when the sea turned yellow due to floating tuff stone dust after a volcanic eruption several centuries ago. However, it is highly likely that the real origin of the name comes from the Latin "mare ialinum", which means clean, transparent sea.
Along the pier stretches a promenade Caracciolo (Via Francesco Caracciolo), lined with colorful buildings, Neapolitan taverns, pizzerias, kiosks with snacks and drinks, Panini and ice cream and coffee shops. Here the fishermen sell their catch of fish and seafood.
Just above the street Caracciola is the eponymous street Mergellina (Via Mergellina), through which the waterfront near the port is also called the promenade of Mergellina.
In the harbour you can stroll along the pier Louise (Molo Luise), whose length is 500 meters.
