Pyramid Fountain in Peterhof (Saint Petersburg); photo, video, description

The Pyramid Fountain is one of the fountains in the Lower Park of the Peterhof Palace and Park Ensemble in Peterhof (Saint Petersburg).

This fountain is one of the most powerful, beautiful and original fountains of the Lower Park of Peterhof, and in total there are about 150 fountains in the park.

The Pyramid fountain is located in the eastern part of the Lower Park, which is called "Montplaisir" (from the ensemble of the Montplaisir Palace located here), and it is clearly visible from afar.

In addition to its beauty and power, the Pyramid fountain is considered the most water-rich, since it consumes about 100 liters of water in one second.

From the first day of its existence, the principle of operation of this technically complex fountain has not changed.

The fountain was built, as well as The Grand Peterhof Palace with parks, according to the decree of Peter I and the drawing of N. Michetti approved by him. In 1724, M.G. Zemtsov completed the construction of the fountain.

At the end of the 18th century, the fountain received a marble frame.

The fountain is a four-sided seven-stage pyramid, which is completely formed by 505 powerful water jets, which beat with such force that at first glance you can not even imagine that the obelisk consists entirely of water.

The fountain's pool is framed by a marble fence with railings decorated with decorative vases. Water from the fountain pool falls down the steps.

In addition to the impressive power, the Pyramid fountain has a symbolic meaning: in the early 18th century, the Russian army had a tradition-at the end points of its movement and in the battlefields to install wooden or stone obelisks, shaped like a pyramid. Thus, the fountain on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, which is a snow-white foaming mass of water, from a distance resembling a triumphal obelisk, is a kind of monument in honor of the victory of Russian troops during the Northern War.
