Roman fountains in Peterhof (Saint Petersburg)

Roman fountains - one of the fountains of the Lower Park of the Palace and Park Ensemble "Peterhof" in Peterhof (St. Petersburg).

Roman fountains are an ensemble of two fountains that have the same design and decoration.

The name of the fountains "Roman" is due to the fact that the fountains in the composition resemble stone water cannons in Rome on the square in front of St. Peter's Cathedral.

The idea of creating Roman fountains in the park at the Grand Peterhof Palace arose in the first quarter of the 18th century.

However, the fountains appeared only in 1739, designed by architects I. Ya. Blank and I. P. Davydov, and were originally made of wood with lead-lined bowls.

In 1800, the architect and skilled stonemason Franz Petrovich Brouwer rebuilt the dilapidated fountains in granite and marble.

During the Great Patriotic War, the fountains and the pipeline connected to them were damaged. Later, a complete restoration was carried out.

Today, the Roman Fountains are one of the most impressive, large and beautiful fountains of the Peterhof Palace and Park Ensemble.

Architecturally, the fountains stretch to the sky. Each of the fountains has a lower pool and two tiers-a common type of fountain in the 18th century.

The height of the fountains is more than 10 meters.

Each of the Roman fountains has five water cannons. The water jets in the fountains simultaneously beat up from the upper tiers, then, falling and crushing against the edges of the marble bowls, hide in the snow-white "plume" of water massive multi-faceted pedestals with gilded relief ornaments: garlands, laurel wreaths, shells and mascarons.

Paths run around the fountains, and on the south side of the fountains there are two flower stalls (flowerbeds), which were originally created in the mid-18th century by the gardener Bernhard Fock.

The outline of the northern side of the stalls follows the shape of the pools of Roman fountains.
