The building of the Moscow railway station

The building of the Moscow railway station itself is a monument and a landmark of St. Petersburg.

At the beginning of 1842, by order of Nicholas I, the construction of a railway between St. Petersburg and Moscow began.

Planning and construction of the station (then Nikolaevsky) in the Neo-Renaissance style was carried out in 1844-1851 by the architect Konstantin Ton. In August 1851, a connection was established between St. Petersburg and Moscow. On August 18, 1851, at 4 o'clock in the morning, the tsar's train of 9 cars departed from the platform.

In 1912, a competition was announced for the design of a new building of the Nikolaevsky railway station. The construction was started according to the project of V. A. Shchuko without demolishing the old building, but it was never finished.

In 1923, the Nikolaev railway was renamed Oktyabrskaya, and the station received the same name. In 1930, the station was renamed Moskovsky.

In the late 1950s, according to the project of architect V. I. Kuznetsov, the building of the Moscow railway Station was reconstructed and expanded - a new wing was added to the right wing with the second lobby of the metro station "Ploshchad Vosstaniya".

In the future, the halls of the station underwent some changes, including in 1993, the bust of Lenin in the arrival hall was replaced by a bust of Peter I by A. S. Charkin and V. V. Olenev.

Round in plan from the side of Vosstaniya Square, the station building is designed in the style of a town hall and is distinguished by a central clock tower, an arched first floor and columns with capitals.
