Garden of Bacchus in Peterhof (Saint Petersburg)

Bacchus Garden is a well-equipped garden located in the Lower Park of the Peterhof Palace and Park Ensemble in Peterhof (Saint Petersburg).

The Bacchus Garden is part of the overall ensemble of the Marli Palace and is located on the shore of the Gulf of Finland behind the palace's Sector Pond.

The garden was planned in the 1720s by Nicolo Michetti, at the same time as the construction of the Marli Palace.

Initially, the garden had a utilitarian meaning. In the garden, Peter I tried to grow grapes, but because of the climate of St. Petersburg, the idea could not be realized.

Today, the Bacchus Garden is a walking area with lawns that are framed by ornamental trees and flowers, including roses.

In the northern part of the garden there is a memorial sign (a stone with a tablet) in honor of the foundation of St. Petersburg.

In the center of the garden is a monumental monument to the founder of St. Petersburg - Peter I.

The monument is a sculptural group mounted on a high three-stage pedestal, which depicts Peter the Great with Louis XV in his arms.

The statue was cast in Paris in the second half of the 19th century on the model of the sculptor A. Bernshtam. During the Great Patriotic War, the monument disappeared - most likely, it was taken out by the German occupiers. Later, a copy of the monument, recreated by the sculptor Nikolai Karlykhanov from a plaster copy and at the expense of the citizens of Peterhof, was installed on the 300th anniversary of Peterhof (September 13, 2005).

The names of the sponsors are indicated on the plaque attached to the pedestal of the monument: V. N. Belenkov, A. I. Bogun, Yu. V. Fleganov and LLC "DiVAn".

At the eastern edge of the Bacchus Garden, along the alley, under the open sky, there is an information and exhibition platform "Peterhof during the war", which tells about the fate of the city during the Great Patriotic War.

The Bacchus Garden is separated from the main ensemble of the Marli Palace (the Sector Pond and the nearby Venus Garden, which, like the Bacchus Garden, had a utilitarian significance and was used to grow fruit for the royal table) by the narrow Shingarka River.
