Basin's house in Saint Petersburg

The Basin House is a former apartment building, which is a monument of the history and architecture of Russian architecture in St. Petersburg, as well as one of the most attractive houses in the city.

Due to its eye-catching architecture, the Basin house is also called the "House with Roosters" (Rooster House) or Gingerbread house.

The Basin House is located in the center of St. Petersburg, on Ostrovsky Square, near Nevsky Prospekt - one of the most visited and beautiful streets of the city.

The building was built in 1878-1879 as a tenement house of the Russian academician and architect Nikolai Petrovich Basin according to his own design and with the participation of N. N. Nikonov.

The building is made in the pseudo-Russian or neo-Russian style, distinguished by a variety of architectural elements.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the house was a bookstore and the office of the publishing house of N. G. Martynov.

Today the house is restored, it is residential. It is an outstanding example of the "Russian style" in the architecture of St. Petersburg, as well as a monument of history and culture.

The five-story building with a reddish hue and two elegant facades, is made with numerous architectural details, including in the form of roosters, reproducing decorative motifs of Russian wooden carvings and embroidery.

The house has turrets and powerful rectangular bay windows, giving the building volume. Also, the facades are decorated with windows of various shapes and patterns with carved "towels", crowning the cornices with kokoshniks, sandricks and columns-cubes.

All this architectural diversity visually makes a massive house airy and light. The building, like a "birthday cake", stands out vividly and" soars " among the surrounding monumental and massive architecture, for example, the neighboring one Alexandrinsky Theater.
