Vindeliker house in Munich (Vindelikerhaus) - former Lueg watchtower (Lueg ins Land)

Vindeliker House is a residential and corporate house, included in the list of Bavarian monuments in order to preserve the historical heritage.

The Vindelikerhaus was built in 1820 on the site of the former second city fortifications of Munich, which included the walls and the Lueg ins Land watchtower also known as the Luger Tower (Lugerturm).

The tower was probably built between 1330 and 1337 in conjunction with the construction of the Isar City Gate (Isartor) and at that time served as a watchtower and observation tower on the Isar River.

The tower had an area of about 5×5 meters and a height of about 20 meters. The upper floor was made of wood and projected above the stone walls. The steep roof rose above the base of the tower.

During its history, the tower also served as a prison, a sobering tower, and in the 18th century as a warehouse for saltpeter, which constitutes gunpowder.

The tower was demolished in 1807.

Only part of the north wall of the tower, which was built into the Vindelikerhaus and is now part of the south wall of the house, remains.

In 1944, nearby Vindelicorum building (address: Marienstrasse, 21 / Marienstraße), located at: Lyug ins land, 5 (Lueg ins Land), was badly damaged. In 1970, the damaged house was demolished. It was then discovered that the separation wall between the houses was the former north wall of the Luga watchtower.

Today, the former Luga watchtower is no longer there, only two adjacent houses testify to it.

There is a fresco on the Vindeliker house (picture), which gives a rough and figurative understanding of what the watchtower and section of the defensive wall looked like in the past.

The plaque on the house tells the following: "Here in ancient times stood the watchtower Lyuga, so-called due to the fact that she gave a good Dalek review". The plate also has the date: "1374 year of the date of construction, 1802 - the date of demolition". However, these dates are historically inaccurate.

There is also an information board on the adjacent building at Lug ins Land 5. And in front of the house there is a rough diagram of the place where the Luga tower was located earlier. This place is marked with red bricks on the sidewalk, near the outer wall of the building.

Near Vindelikerhaus there are two historical evidence of the former fortifications of the city of Munich. This:

- remains of city walls and the tower base Prince (Prinzessturm);

- Isartor city gate (Isartor), part of the premises which now houses the Museum, Carla Valentine.
