Portopi district, Palma, Mallorca

Portopi - a port and an area belonging to a larger area - the administrative zone of Ponent, which is part of the city of Palma and is the western part of Palma relative to the center of the coast.

On the West side of the coast Porthope is bordered by residential and tourist area of Cala Major, and the North-East with the district of El Terreno, also forming part of the municipality of Palma de Mallorca.

From ancient times to the present, the Bay Porthope was a port city, as I had a good geographical position as a natural refuge, protected by a rocky Cape.

In the era of the Roman Empire it was the city's main port. During the history, the civil war in Spain, the port was used for military purposes.

Currently Porthope is a commercial and port area, a growing urbanisation, as well as the ferry pier, from which, including the ferries to Ibiza (or Eivissa) and Menorca.

The district is famous and largest of the eponymous shopping center with a casino.

Coast Porthope

Medieval tower

The edges of the Bay Porthope are two medieval towers: a tower-lighthouse Porthope (Torre de Portopi / Porto Pi lighthouse) and the tower Praires (Torre de Paraires).

Tower Porthope is one of the oldest lighthouses in Spain, has optical devices, some of the best in Europe. There is a tower on this spot since the 14th century and originally served as a watchtower. Chapel Of San Nicolas

The chapel of San nicolás de Porthope (Capilla de San Nicolas de Portopi), originally dates back to the year 1246 and dedicated to the patron Saint of sailors.

Between 1880 and 1890, the chapel was demolished to expand the quarry and built a new chapel, which was moved to the end of the 20th century to make space for the construction of the shopping centre "Porto PI".

Now the Church is also known under the name of San Pedro Claver (Iglesia San Pedro Claver, Portopi).

from the centre of Palma №№ 1, N1, 4, 20 and 46. Passing intercity buses № 104 and 107;

- from the airport through Palma city centre: first bus A1, and then in Porthope.
