The monument to the hole is one of the most unusual and incomprehensible monuments in St. Petersburg.
The monument is also known as the granite block sculpture.
The official name of the monument is "Nature and Man".
The monument was created in 1996 as part of the program of improvement of pedestrian zones in the central part of the city. The authors of the monument are: architect Eugene Dukhovny and sculptor V. Ivanov.
The monument is a large block of granite, in which a small round through hole is cut; and it looks as if the stone was simply forgotten or the monument remained unfinished.
They say that a bronze branch was supposed to pass through the hole of a granite block, as a symbol of life making its way up through all earthly obstacles. But this element of the monument was never installed, leaving only a gaping hole and numerous questions, as well as an inexhaustible ground for fantasies - from sarcasm to the genius of the authors.
Despite all its strangeness and unsightliness, this monument is very popular among visitors to the city, and it is already associated with popular beliefs:
- if you want to find your soulmate, you need to put your hand in the hole;
- to fulfill a wish, you also need to put your hand in the hole of the monument and make a wish at the same time - it will come true within a few months.
The monument to the hole is located in the center of St. Petersburg, not far from Nevsky Prospekt, in a small square near the house at the address: Mayakovsky Street, 3.
Nearest metro stations: "Mayakovskaya" and "Ploshchad Vosstaniya".
