The Monument to Charles IV (Socha Karla IV) is a neo-Gothic monument in Prague depicting King and Emperor Charles IV in full size.
The monument to Charles IV is located in the historical center of Prague, on Crusaders Square (Křižovnické náměstí), which is near the famous Charles Bridge (Karlów most), spanning the Vltava River.
The monument can be seen on the square near the church of St. Francis of Assisi and the adjacent monastery of the Crusaders with the red star, in the walls of which today, among other things, there is Charles Bridge Museum (Muzeum Karlova mostu).
The monument was created by the Nuremberg caster Jacob Daniel Burgschmit according to the project of the German sculptor Ernst Julius Genel in 1844.
The opening of the monument was planned in 1848 on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the founding of Charles University, but was postponed due to the revolution, and the monument was opened on January 31, 1851.
Today the monument is one of the most important Neo-Gothic monuments in Central Europe.
The statue of Charles IV is life-size, and the height of the monument together with the pedestal is almost 4 meters.
The sculpture of Charles IV is installed on top of the architectural pedestal.
With one hand, Karl leans on a sword - a symbol of his military victories, and in the other he holds the bull of the foundation of the University of Prague.
Charles IV's gaze is directed at the people walking around the square.
The pedestal of the monument depicts allegories of four faculties: theological, medical, legal and philosophical, and in the corners there are figures of four important personalities of the Karl era: Arnosht from Pardubice, Jan Ochko from Vlashim, Benes from Vartemberk and Matias from Arras.
It should be noted that Charles University (Universitas Carolina) in Prague is one of the oldest European universities and the oldest north of Italy and east of Paris.
The address of the monument to Charles IV: Křižovnické náměstí, Praha 1 - Staré Město.
