The ball fountain was designed by architect Mikhail Zemtsov in 1725 and was originally located in front of the old main entrance to the Summer Garden - from the side of the "funny meadow" (now the Field of Mars).
During the flood of 1777, the fountain was damaged and in 1786 it was filled in. It was recreated in 2010-2011 on the basis of iconographic materials and archaeological research.
The name "Crown" fountain was given by the shape of the jets forming a composition similar to a crown.
The fountain has a three-stage bowl measuring 12.5x10 meters. The fountain water flows down the steps of the bowl.
The decorated decoration of the Crown Fountain consists of shells and gilded mascarons. The mascaron was based on a sample found on the territory of the Summer Garden in the 1960s and transferred to the State Museum-Reserve "Peterhof" for storage.
