The Jindřich Tower (Jindřišska věž) is the historical bell tower of the church in Prague, where exhibitions are held today, there is an observation deck and a cafe.
"Jindřišska věž" in translation means Henry's Tower.
The Jindřich Tower is located in the center of Prague, in the Nové Město district (Nové Město, New Town), near the famous Wenceslas Square (Vaclavske namesti).
The tower is the original bell tower of the Church of Saints Henry and Kunhuty (Kostel svatého Jindřicha a svaté Kunhuty). Therefore, the tower has the name "Henry Tower" or "Henry Tower".
This bell tower of Gothic architecture reaches a height of 65.7 meters, which makes it the tallest free-standing bell tower in Prague.
The bell tower was built in 1472-1476 from sandstone with a wooden roof with a slate roof. In 1577 it was added by an upper tower and a clock on the facade. On the sides of the clock are the coats of arms of the Old and New Cities and lands of the Czech Crown.
During the history of the tower has suffered repeatedly. So, in 1648, during the siege of Prague by the Swedes, the tower served as a military police station and was destroyed by Swedish artillery. Another artillery damage occurred in 1757, when Prussian troops besieged Prague after the Battle of Sterbohol. And in 1801, the high Gothic roof of the tower could not withstand a hurricane.
In 1876-1879, the restoration of the tower was carried out according to the project of architect Josef Moker, after which the tower reached its current size (65.7 m) and became the tallest free-standing bell tower in Prague.
The last changes to the tower were made in the 1970s, and in 2001 new floors and an elevator were added inside.
Today, the Jindřich Tower is open to the public, is one of the sights of Prague and its beautiful decoration. Especially striking is the relief and elegant upper part of the clock tower.
The Yindřich Tower has several floors.
In the tower there are: a carillon, a cafe-bar, a restaurant, an alcohol store, small expositions and exhibitions, including nativity scenes on the eve and after Christmas; cultural events, including celebrations and weddings, are held in the premises of the tower.
On the top floor of the tower (attic) there is an observation deck giving panoramic views of the center of Prague.
The ascent to the observation deck is paid.
