The House of the Order of the Jesuits or the House of the College of the Jesuits is an architectural monument of the early 19th century, located in the heart of St. Petersburg.
The three-story building was built between 1801 and 1805 by the Swiss-born architect Luigi Rusca.
Until 1815, the building housed the Jesuit collegium (a closed educational institution - a noble boarding school). The building became known as the Jesuit House.
Meetings, educational classes were held in the building, and a boarding house was opened, where many representatives of noble families lived and studied: Golitsyns, Vyazemskys, Stroganovs, Odoyevskys, Shuvalovs and others.
Since 1815, after the Jesuits were expelled, a Military orphanage has been operating in the house. In 1856-1873, the building was occupied by the First Department of the Imperial Chancellery. Later, the house was converted into living quarters.
Today, the building is residential, and some of the premises are given over to commerce.
The facades of the building, which have preserved their original appearance, in the central parts have Ionic colonnades, the columns of which are decorated with capitals. The facade, facing the Italian Street, consists of ten columns connecting the two upper floors. The center of the other facade, facing the embankment of the Griboyedov Canal, is decorated with a six-column portico supporting a simple pediment.
In fact, there is nothing particularly outstanding in the architecture of the building, such a design of houses was typical of Russian classicism of the late 18th - early 19th century.
The building of the former house of the Jesuit College attracts attention as part of the ensemble that adorns the embankment of the Griboyedov Canal.
The part of the canal where the house of the Order of the Jesuits is located is a very popular tourist route, as there are such significant attractions as: Saved on blood, Mikhailovsky Palace - now Russian Museum, Nevsky Prospekt (one of the most visited streets of the city) - on the corner of Nevsky and Griboyedov Canal are located: Singer House and Kazan Cathedral.
