The Grolman bastion is one of the bastions that was part of the defensive belt of the fortress city of Konigsberg (now the city of Kaliningrad).
The bastion was built in 1851 according to the project of Ernst Ludwig von Aster as one of the objects of the Second fortification of the city.
The bastion is named after the Prussian military leader and participant in the Napoleonic Wars of 1807-1815 - General Karl Wilhelm von Grolmann.
The Grolman bastion is the best preserved fortress structure of Konigsberg with a full set of fortifications inherent in it: a horseshoe-shaped reduit with a courtyard space for sheltering personnel, an earthen rampart, a caponier, two half-caponiers, two casemates of the guard part, entrance gates and a bridgehead fortification.
The earthen rampart of the bastion had a complex profile and was intended to accommodate artillery firing positions. The three-storey horseshoe-shaped reduit made of ceramic bricks was an internal fortification of the bastion, which served to strengthen the defense capability and ensure combat operations in the bastion in case the enemy captured the main shaft.
It is noteworthy that according to some reports, there were mine chambers in front of the Grolman bastion, with the help of which the garrison could be warned about an underground mine attack by the enemy.
The Grolman bastion was connected by an underground passage to the neighboring building - the Kronprinz barracks.
During the assault on Konigsberg in April 1945, the command post of the 367th Infantry Division of the Wehrmacht was located in the Grolman bastion. The bastion was destroyed and was taken on April 7-8, 1945.
In the post-war years, the bastion was used as a vegetable storage.
Today, the Grolman bastion is included in the list of city attractions, has the status of a cultural heritage site of regional significance and is one of the objects of the recommended route "Kaliningrad fortification".
