Franz Kafka Museum in Prague (Muzeum Franze Kafky), literary and biographical

The Franz Kafka Museum (Muzeum Franze Kafky) is a museum in Prague dedicated to the German-speaking Bohemian writer Franz Kafka, who is widely known as one of the main figures of 20th century literature.

The museum is characterized as literary and biographical.

Franz Kafka was born in Prague on July 3, 1883, died in a sanatorium in Kirling on June 3, 1924 and was buried at the New Jewish Cemetery in Prague-Strashnitsa on June 11.

The Franz Kafka Museum is located in the historical center of Prague, in a unique building of the former Herget brick factory on the Mala Strana (Mala Strana, Small Town) bank of the Vltava River, near the famous Charles Bridge (Karlów most).

In the courtyard in front of the museum building there is a popular sculpture-fountain "Pissing Men" (Čówrající postavy).

The Franz Kafka Museum presents most of Kafka's first editions, correspondence, diaries, manuscripts, photographs and drawings that have never been exhibited before, three-dimensional exhibits, five audiovisual programs and music created specifically for the museum.

The permanent exhibition at the museum consists of two sections: "Existential Space" and "Imaginary topography".

The Existential Space section shows how Prague influenced Franz's life, what trace it left in him and how its transformative power influenced him. The exhibition presents Kafka's diaries and extensive correspondence with family members, friends, loved ones and publishers.

The Imaginary Topography section tells how Kafka depicts his city. This section is one of the most mysterious approaches in modern literature, because with rare exceptions Kafka does not name the places he describes in his novels and short stories.
