Valladolid, Mexico - travel guide: attractions, streets, hotels, how to get there

Valladolid is a colonial city in eastern Mexico, located on the Yucatan Peninsula.

Mexican Valladolid was named after the Spanish city of Valladolid.

The first Valladolid in Yucatan was founded by the nephew of the Spanish conquistador Francisco de Montejo on May 27, 1543 in order to consolidate the Spanish settlers. At that time, the city was located at some distance from its current location, in a lagoon called Chauac Ha. However, at that time, the first Spanish settlers complained about mosquitoes and humidity at the original site and petitioned to move the city inland. On March 24, 1545, Valladolid was moved to its present location and built on the site of one of the Mayan cities.

Today Valladolid is a very popular tourist destination in Yucatan and attracts tourists who want to get acquainted with the history and culture of the Yucatan Peninsula. The city stands out for its colonial appearance: small colorful houses, some attractions and museums, as well as nearby cenotes and an archaeological zone - the ancient Mayan city of Chichen Itza.

In the very center of Valladolid is the Plaza Principal with the Park Francisco Canton Rosado (Parque Francisco Canton Rosado).

The square is surrounded by historical buildings characteristic of the city, among which stand out:

- Municipal Palace or Town Hall of Valladolid (Palacio Municipal) with an art exhibition on the second floor. The Town Hall is open to the public;

- The Cathedral of San Servacio (Catedral de San Gervacio), named after Saint Servatius and is a cathedral with two tall bell towers, a shield carved in stone in the middle and a clock on the main facade.
