Cancun is one of the most popular resorts in Mexico, located on the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo, near the waters of the Caribbean Sea.
Cancun is divided into the city of Cancun itself (downtown), where the life of local residents is mainly concentrated, there is also a beach, hotels and some tourist infrastructure, and a hotel zone (Zona Hotelera or Zona Hoteleria, hotel zone or Hotel zone / Hotelier), which is also called the Tourist zone and which is a sand spit in the form of a seven, where the main tourist life takes place and the bulk of accommodation facilities (hotels, apartments) are concentrated
On the one hand, the spit of the hotel zone of Cancun is washed by the lagoon Nichupte, in which crocodiles are found, and on the other by the waters of the Caribbean Sea.
It is on the spit that the most popular beaches of Cancun are located, which are one continuous tourist part of the city of Cancun.
Between the beaches, along which hotels stand, and the lagoon with a park area, there is a driveway with sidewalks - Boulevard Kukulkan, along which there are cafes, bars, restaurants and nightclubs, shopping malls, supermarkets, shops and souvenir shops and some entertainment (aquarium, Ferris wheel, museums). Along the Kukulkan road, along the entire hotel zone of Cancun, public buses R1 and R2 run almost around the clock.
The Hotelier's zone stretches from downtown Cancun - from 1 to 25 kilometers. All beaches of the hotel zone of Cancun are distinguished depending on the presence of waves:
1. a small part of the spit-seven, from 1 to 7-8 kilometers, are beaches without waves and shallow, since they are covered from the open sea by the nearby island of Mujeres (the Island of Women, Isla Mujeres)
2. in the place where Kukulkan Boulevard makes a 90-degree turn and has a bend called "Punta Cancun" (Punta Cancun), from 7-8 to 9.5 kilometers, these are beaches with small waves or no waves at all, depending on the weather, and moderately deep waters
3. the longest part of the spit, from 9.5 to 22 kilometers, are beaches with large waves and, mostly, they are wider and with snow-white sand
4. from 23 to 25 kilometers - a coral reef without waves and several beaches, including a beach that is officially allowed with animals
All beaches of Cancun are public and free. There are beach clubs and some entertainment on the beaches.
There are official public beaches to which roads lead from Kukulkan Boulevard. Such beaches are equipped with urns, free toilets and showers, straw umbrellas from the sun are installed; sun loungers and umbrellas can be rented for a fee. The cost of renting sun loungers and umbrellas can vary from beach to beach and is about 250 pesos per day for two sun beds and an umbrella.
In addition to official public beaches, there are beaches along which there are hotels with direct access to the beaches, sun loungers and umbrellas on the beaches. Although these beaches are also public and you can stay on your own beach towel on them, however, you can go to such beaches either through the lobby of hotels (not all hotels allow non-guests to the beaches), or through the passages near hotels (if any), or walk along the coast along the sea line through official public beaches.
It is not uncommon on the beaches and in the sea of Cancun - algae (sargasso), which are unpredictable and can appear anywhere, more often after rain, and can also be caused by winds and currents. Algae on the beaches are cleaned, and the better the hotels, the more thoroughly the algae is cleaned on the beaches near the hotels.

The hotel zone begins (1 kilometer) with a modern and elite quarter Puerto Cancun, which is a residential area with well-groomed territories and access to the coast, in which housing is located in gated residential complexes - condominiums and private villas with piers from which you can sail on a yacht through channels connected to the sea.
On the territory of this area there is a shopping center "Marina Town Center" and a golf club. Nearby there is a section of kayaking and canoeing "Showroom Alture".
The beach strip is wide and sandy, there are sun loungers and umbrellas from the sun.

Las Perlas Beach (Playa Las Perlas), located at 2.5 kilometers of the hotel zone.
This is an official public beach, to which a path leads from Kukulkan Boulevard.
The beach has a Blue Flag award.
On the beach: a lifeguard tower, showers and toilets (free of charge), straw umbrellas from the sun, urns.
Marina Las Perlas Marina with boat rental is located near the beach.
The sea is shallow, quiet and calm.
!!! Las Perlas Beach and beyond, somewhere up to 5.5 kilometers of the hotel zone, are not the best beaches of Cancun (subjective opinion).
The beach of Juventud (Playa Juventud), follows immediately after the beach of Las Perlas and begins at 2.8 kilometers.
The beach is almost the same as Las Perlas Beach. The sea is shallow, there are often algae.

!!! Personally, we (subjective opinion) liked the above three beaches only for walking along the sea line. It is not crowded here, quiet and peaceful, you can collect beautiful shells.
Linda Beach (Playa Linda), which starts at 3.5 kilometers and stretches beyond the Nichupte Canal (Canal Nichupte), connecting the Caribbean Sea and the Nichupte Lagoon. A bridge runs over the canal.
There is light soft sand on the beach, there are water and beach activities. The sea water is already a more pleasant color, shallow.
Sun loungers and umbrellas from the sun of the hotels are placed on the beach strip. There are piers with rental of water equipment and boats, beach entertainment, massage services, shops, cafes and bars.

You can go to the beach at the Occidental Costa Cancun - All Inclusive Hotel, near the Nichupte Canal.
By the canal is the ferry pier El Embarcadero, from which public ferries can reach the island of Isla Mujeres (Island of Women, Isla Mujeres).
There is also an 80-meter tower with a closed rotating observation deck "Torre Escenica del Embarcadero de Cancun" (lifting is paid), boat rental and pirate ships "Captain Hook Cancun", which go to sea in the evening and arrange themed shows with dinner for visitors (entertainment is paid).
On the opposite side of the Nichupte Canal, Lindos Beach continues (5th kilometer). There are also beach and sea entertainment, there is a cafe. The sand is light and soft. The seawater is becoming increasingly clear and clear, but still also shallow.

Langosta Beach (Playa Langosta), located at 5.5 kilometers.

Near the beach there is one of the popular inscriptions in Cancun with large multicolored letters "CANCUN". There are several such inscriptions in the hotel zone.

Next comes the Pes-Volador zone, the so-called Pes-Volador beach (Playa Pez Volador), whose name translates as "Flying Fish".
This is a beach without infrastructure. There is an exit to the beach from the boulevard. There are sand and rocky formations on the beach.

Further along the beach strip there are hotels, which also belong to the beach of Pes Volador.
It is from here that the best beaches of Cancun begin with clean and transparent sea water, where it is no longer too shallow, but also not so deep, which is well suited for a family holiday with children. Algae on the beach and in the sea are cleaned regularly.
On the beaches and in the sea, white, fine and delicate sand. The sand is quite dense and heavy, so the sea water remains clean. Also on the beaches there are rocky formations that only complement the picturesqueness.
The beach strip is wide, with palm trees and hotel pools that have direct access to the beach.

Tortugas Beach (Playa Tortugas), which translates as "Turtle Beach", located on the 6.3-7 kilometer of Kukulkan Boulevard.
This is a public beach, which is accessed from the boulevard.
There is light sand on the beach, there are beach cafes and bars, a public toilet, sun loungers and umbrellas can be rented, water activities are provided and there is a jumping tower.
From the pier by the beach, public ferries can reach the island of Mujeres.
There is parking and an OXXO supermarket near Tortugas Beach.
Immediately behind the beach of Tortugas lies first the rocky-sandy, and then the sandy coast, along which the villas are located.
It is mostly quiet and peaceful here. From the accommodation facilities:

Ancha Beach (Playa Ancha) is an excellent beach with a wide beach strip and clear sea water, located at 8.5 kilometers.
It is quite shallow in the sea water, but it is quite possible to swim, which is well suited for a family holiday with young children.
This is one of our favorite beaches in Cancun without waves (but it all depends on the weather conditions).
Some water activities are provided, there are bars and a place for beach volleyball.

Ancha Beach and the beaches following it to Chakmool Beach are also good because they are within walking distance from the most developed part of the hotel zone, where shops and souvenir shops, shopping centers, supermarkets, nightclubs, cafes, bars and restaurants are located along Kukulkan Boulevard.
Behind Ancha Beach lies a rather narrow sandy-rocky coastline, along which there are three hotels with access to beaches and equipped descents into the sea waters. The depth of the sea water is decent.

This is a public beach, which has a path from Kukulkan Boulevard.

From the pier by the beach, public ferries can reach the island of Mujeres.
Punta Cancun, this is the place where Kukulkan Boulevard makes a 90-degree turn and has a bend.
In this place, the beach strip has white and soft sand, the sea water is mostly clean and calm, there are small waves. The depth is great for swimming.

Gaviota Azul Beach (Playa Gaviota Azul, which translates as "Blue Seagull") and Forum Beach or Lagarto Beach (Playa Forum or Playa Lagarto) are two public beaches that are the most famous and popular beaches of the tourist part of the city.
The beaches of Gaviota Azul and Forum are located immediately on the cape of Punta Cancun and represent a single beach strip, where one beach smoothly flows into another.
The beaches are wide; the beaches have light, dense and soft sand. Rescuers are on duty, there are first aid stations, showers, urns, you can rent sun loungers and umbrellas from the sun.
The sea water is clean and transparent, there are often waves. There are fewer or no waves on Gaviota Azul Beach, compared to Forum Beach.
Hotels close the beaches from the road. There are also beach clubs and a supermarket.
Among the beach clubs where you can rent sun loungers and umbrellas are the famous beach and night club "Coco Bongo", and the beach club "Mandala Beach Club".
The public entrance to the beaches is located near the Coco Bongo Club.

Behind the beaches of Gaviota Azul and Forum, along Kukulkan Boulevard, there are: shops and souvenir shops, shopping centers, a large supermarket "Chedraui" with a good food court on the top floor, currency exchangers, nightclubs, cafes, bars and restaurants. This is the busiest and most developed part of the Cancun hotel zone.
!!! Further, the beaches are a single beach strip with light and soft sand, which becomes a little harder as you approach Marlin Beach.
Here the coast is open to the ocean and there are always waves, and the sea water is a beautiful color. This is exactly the color of water that can often be seen in advertisements and in photographs. There is also a good depth here, but it is almost impossible to swim in the sea because of the constant waves.
Chacmool Beach (Playa Chacmool), which is also sometimes called Chac Mool Beach (Playa Chac-Mool).
The beach is public and is located at 9.5 km of Kukulkan Boulevard.

Marlin Beach (Playa Marlin) is a public beach with access from Kukulkan Boulevard, located at kilometer 13.
This beach is the same as Chakmool Beach, and with the same set of services. Only the sand is a little rougher. Sun loungers and umbrellas can be rented.

There are places for car parking near Marlin Beach (Car rental in Cancun →), supermarket OXXO, Plaza Kukulkan shopping center and Luxury Avenue Cancun store.
Not far from Marlin Beach, if you go in the opposite direction - to Chakmol beach, on the small island of the lagoon there are large shopping centers "La Isla" and "Plaza La Isla II" with an aquarium, Ferris wheel, casino, boutiques and catering. In this part of the hotel zone of Cancun, also along Kukulkan Boulevard, there are restaurants, cafes and some shops. The seafood restaurant "Lorenzillo's" with a view of the lagoon and the restaurant named after the film Forrest Gump - "Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. Cancun" are particularly distinguished from the catering.
Beaches of San Miguelito (Plata San Miguelito) and Bayenas (Playa Ballenas, which translates as Whale Beach), located at 13-15 kilometers.
The beaches are public and are located close to each other, so, in fact, they are a single beach strip.
The beaches have light sand, the sea water is clean and of a beautiful color.

Delfines Beach (Playa Delfines) is one of the most famous and picturesque beaches of Cancun, located at 17.5 kilometers of the Hotelier zone.
The name "Delphines" was given to the beach because dolphins can sometimes be seen in the sea waters near the beach.
The beach is marked with a Blue flag.
There is light sand on the beach. Sea water is a beautiful color. There are almost always waves, sometimes quite large. There is sand at the bottom, stones are rarely found.
The beach is wide and has all the necessary infrastructure: palm umbrellas from the sun, benches, showers, toilets, urns, a rescue and first aid service, playgrounds and sports grounds. The beach is suitable for people with disabilities. There is free parking near the beach. There are no sunbeds for rent on the beach.

Near the Delfines beach there is the most popular inscription in Cancun with large multicolored letters "CANCUN", in order to be photographed at which, more often it is necessary to stand in line.
Across the pedestrian and driveway from Delfines Beach there are archaeological excavations of the remnants of the Maya civilization - the ruins of El Rey (El Rey Archaeological Zone). Punta Nizuc is a quiet green area with a coral reef and places for snorkeling, diving and watching marine animals. You can go kayaking on the Nichupte Lagoon, which is inhabited by manatees and turtles.
In the area there are small beaches of the same name Nisuk (Playa Nizuc) without waves, which is popular among water sports enthusiasts and vacationers looking for privacy.

Coral Beach (Playa Coral), which is also known as El Mirador Beach 2 (Playa El Mirador II) is the last beach of Cancun, located on the 25 kilometer of the hotel zone, outside the spit, at the turn of the road to Cancun Airport.

It is a small sandy beach with straw umbrellas from the sun and parking. Dogs are officially allowed to come to the beach.
Near the Corral beach there is an amusement park "Ventura Park" with water slides, dolphinarium, zipline, go-karting and other entertainment.

The beach has a Blue Flag award, but is not popular among tourists.
There is large yellow sand on the beach, there are algae. The sea water is calm and quite shallow. Boats and speedboats are moored near the beach.
Nevertheless, the beach has its own charm, as it is rather local and rural. On the beach: showers, toilets, straw umbrellas from the sun, lifeguards are on duty. Nearby there are several coastal "authentic" fish cafes and restaurants.
