Stieglitz Academy and Stieglitz Museum in Saint Petersburg

The Stieglitz Academy is one of the oldest universities in Russia, founded in 1786 at the expense of Baron Alexander Ludvigovich Stieglitz.

Full name of the educational institution: St. Petersburg State Art and Industrial Academy named after A.L. Stiglitz.

Today, the ensemble of the Academy consists of the building of the academy itself and the adjacent building of the Museum of Applied Art at the A.L. Stieglitz Academy of Art and Industry.

Anyone can visit the Stieglitz Museum as part of an excursion.

The history of the academy, originally as the Central School of Technical Drawing (TSUTR), began in the second half of the 19th century, when in the era of rapid development of Russian industry, the problem of training artists for production arose.

In 1876, according to the rescript of Alexander II, the Central School of Technical Drawing was founded with funds donated by the banker and industrialist Alexander Ludvigovich Stieglitz.

The school building was built from 1878 to 1881 by architects A. I. Krakau and R. A. Gedike. The academy was opened on December 29, 1881 in the presence of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich.

Starting in 1918, the school changed its name and status, but kept its own style. So, in 1922, it was merged with the former Imperial Academy of Arts into the Higher Art Technical Workshops. In 1948, the school became a university, which since 1953 bore the name of the outstanding sculptor Vera Ignatyevna Mukhina, so it was often called the " Mukhinsky School "or simply"Mukha".

In 1994, the school was renamed the St. Petersburg State Academy of Art and Industry, which in 2007 was returned to the name of the founder-Alexander Ludvigovich Stieglitz.

The main, oldest building of the school (academic building) is located at the address: Solyanoy Lane, 13.

Stieglitz Academy Museum

The museum of the Stieglitz Academy is called: the Museum of Applied Art of the St. Petersburg State Art and Industrial Academy named after A. L. Stieglitz.

The museum was established on May 27 (May 15, old style), 1878 and was initially located in the school building.

The hotel building of the museum, near the main building of the school, was built in 1885-1896 by the architect M. E. Mesmacher.

The opening of the art and Industrial Museum of Baron Stieglitz took place on May 12, 1896 in the presence of Nicholas II and Alexandra Feodorovna.

The exhibits for the museum were purchased, including at international auctions, from famous foreign and Russian antiquaries and collectors; which eventually allowed us to collect an extensive and unique collection containing monuments of Antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and including works of Western European, Eastern and Russian applied art of the 17th and 18th centuries.

After the revolution, the museum was taken over by Hermitage Museum, becoming its I Branch. After the Great Patriotic War, the museum was also revived at the recreated school.

Today, the museum building itself is a majestic and outstanding architectural monument of St. Petersburg during the historicism period.

The decoration of the museum building includes sculptures, columns, portico, medallions, etc.

A sign on the museum building

Near the main entrance to the museum there are architectural lanterns decorated with putti angels, symbolizing the fields of applied art.

There is a museum in the walls of the building, where you can see Russian and Western European applied art, as well as unique interiors of the 19th century: an Ante-room, Roman Gallery, Teremok, Small Italian Gallery (gallery of cabinets), Rossellino Hall, Medici Hall, Furnace Hall, Small Grotesque Gallery, Coptic Gallery, Large Exhibition Hall, Papal Gallery, Roman Staircase.

All these are objects of applied art (there are no paintings - paintings): furniture of the 16th-19th centuries, Oriental ceramics, Western European porcelain, artistic metal, costumes, dolls, Russian tiled stoves and other things that have not only artistic value, but also a utilitarian function.
