The Palace Pier is a pier and a grand descent to the Neva River in the historical center of St. Petersburg.
The pier is decorated with figures of lions.
On the left bank of the Bolshaya Neva, near each other, there are two berths called "Palace Pier". One of them is located at The Palace Embankment, near the Winter Palace, and the second, which will be discussed in this article , is at the Admiralty Embankment, near the drawbridge of the Palace Bridge and the Admiralty building.
The pier was built in 1820-1824 by the architect Karl Rossi (builder A. D. Gotman) and was originally located upstream, in the place where the entrance to the Palace Bridge is located today.
Since the construction of the Palace Bridge began in 1914, the Palace Pier was moved downstream to the place where it is located today. In the future, the name "Palace Pier" also passed to the pier located above the Palace Bridge, opposite the Winter Palace.
The famous copper sculptures of two lions located on granite pedestals on both sides of the wide staircase of the Palace Pier were installed in 1832 and today are the most famous lions of St. Petersburg.
The Palace Pier is a wide granite staircase descent to the waters of the Bolshaya Neva, consisting of two flights of eight steps separated by a small granite platform. The platform at the edges has two ledges facing the river.
Today, the palace pier is used as a pier for pleasure boats, on which during the navigation period you can make a water excursion along the rivers and canals of the city.
Also from the pier there are "Meteors" to Kronstadt and to The lower Park of the Grand Palace of Peterhof.
From the Palace pier there are beautiful panoramic views of the Palace Bridge and Vasilyevsky Island, located on the opposite bank of the Neva River, where you can see: the arrow of Vasilyevsky Island, The Kunstkamera, the building of the Twelve Colleges, the Menshikov Palace, etc.
