Narva Gate is a triumphal gate and monument in St. Petersburg, erected in honor of Russia's victories in the war with Napoleon's army.
Today there is a museum in the gate.
The gate was erected as a Triumphal Arch in 1827-1834 in memory of the heroes of the Patriotic War of 1812. The gate was erected according to the project of architect Vasily Petrovich Stasov on the site where there was an arch made of wood, erected by architect Giacomo Quarenghi for the solemn meeting of the victorious Russian guard returning from Paris in 1814.
The Stasov Gate retained the idea of Kvarnegi, but was built of brick lined with copper. The best sculptors of the Academy of Arts worked on the sculptural appearance of the arch: V.I. Demut-Malinovsky, S.S. Pimenov, P.K. Klodt, M.G. Krylov, N.A. Tokarev and I. Leppe.
Subsequently, the gates were restored, including after they were badly damaged during the Great Patriotic War.
The height of the Narva Gate is more than 30 meters, and its width is 28 meters.
Narva Triumphal Gates are made in Empire style, they are a single-span arch and richly decorated.
All the decoration of the gates is connected with the theme of victory: figures of Russian heroes in chain mail and helmets are installed in the niches; reliefs depicting banners and victory trumpets are located along the frieze; gilded inscriptions on the attic and on the sides of the arch tell about the places of battles; and the monument is crowned by a magnificent chariot with the figure of Niki, drawn by six horses.
There are inscriptions on the sides of the gate: "Started on August 26, 1827", "Opened on August 17, 1834".
From 1939 to the present, the Narva Gate has been a memorial museum "Narva Triumphal Gate", owned by the State Museum of Urban Sculpture.
