The monument to Alexander Pushkin in the Lyceum Garden is one of the most famous and most romantic of the Pushkin monuments in St. Petersburg.
The monument is located in the Lyceum Garden of the Pushkin city of St. Petersburg (formerly Tsarskoye Selo), between the Znamenskaya Church / wingCatherine's Palace, which now houses the memorial museum-Lyceum and Alexander Park with the palace.
The bronze monument to Alexander Pushkin, a lyceum student, was created according to a sketch by the sculptor Robert Romanovich Bach, approved by Emperor Nicholas II. The creation of the monument was timed to coincide with the approaching 100th anniversary of the poet's birth.
The monument was opened on October 15, 1900.
Why Pushkin-Lyceum student? Since Alexander Pushkin was a lyceum student of the Imperial Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum, located in the northern wing of the Catherine Palace.
The monument is located on a high pedestal, under which, when the monument was laid in 1899, a bronze plaque with a commemorative text was solemnly placed: "In the summer of 1899, May 26th day...".
The pedestal for the monument to Pushkin was created by the architect Alexander Romanovich Bach (brother of R. R. Bach), who at that time lived in Tsarskoye Selo.
During the Great Patriotic War, the monument was hidden-buried in the ground in the Lyceum Garden, and after the war - returned.
In the monument, A. S. Pushkin is depicted sitting on a bench with a romantic and mysterious expression on his face. Next to the sculpture on the bench lies the Lyceum cap (cap) of Alexander Sergeevich.
