Mikhail Mikhailovich Palace (Malo-Mikhailovsky Palace) in Saint Petersburg

The Mikhail Mikhailovich Palace is a historical building in St. Petersburg, which was built for Grand Duke Mikhail Mikhailovich, grandson of Nicholas I and great-uncle of Nicholas II.

The palace is also known as Malo-Mikhailovsky or Maly Mikhailovsky Palace. This name was given to the palace because by the time of construction, there were already Mikhailovsky and Novo-Mikhailovsky palaces, therefore, to facilitate understanding, the name "Malo-Mikhailovsky" was assigned to the palace.

The Malo-Mikhailovsky Palace is located in the center of St. Petersburg, on one of the most beautiful embankments of the city - the Admiralteiskaya Embankment (Neva River).

The Palace of Grand Duke Mikhail Mikhailovich is a majestic and voluminous structure that overlooks the Admiralty Embankment, the Azov and Black Sea lanes, and also has an inner courtyard.

The palace was built on the lands of the Admiralty shipyard, which in 1884 was acquired by Grand Duke Mikhail Mikhailovich.

The construction of the palace took place according to the plans of the architect Maximilian Yegorovich Mesmacher in 1885-1891. The palace was equipped with water supply, sewerage, telephone, gas and electricity, and the area in front of the entrance was paved.

However, Grand Duke Mikhail Mikhailovich did not live in his mansion, because he was exiled from Russia, because of his marriage in 1891 to the granddaughter of Alexander Pushkin-Countess Sofia Nikolaevna Merenberg. He did this despite the ban of Emperor Alexander III. After leaving, the newlyweds settled in London.

In 1911, the building was sold to the insurance joint stock company "Russian Lloyd" and a significant reconstruction was carried out, which was led by the architect P. K. Bergstresser.

In 1917, the former palace was nationalized and changed its owners several times.

Today the palace is an architectural monument of the 19th century. Stylized as the Italian Renaissance. It has three high floors with inter-storey draughts.

The facade cladding of the building is made of gray and dark pink sandstone. The high ground floor is lined with Finnish granite and has small windows. The first floor is rusticated, the second is decorated with paired semi-columns with capitals, the third with pilasters with capitals.

The entire facade of 1-3 floors is cut through with wide arched windows. The corner of the palace has a balcony. The facade is completed with a cornice with a balustrade. The entrance is decorated with an architectural two-column portico.
