The Golden Gate is the most exquisite and the main gate of the Catherine Palace Palace complex in the Pushkin city of St. Petersburg (formerly Tsarskoye Selo).
The Golden Gate is located on the axis of the Catherine Palace, facing the Alexander Park (Sadovaya Street / Podkaprizaya road) and lead to the Parade ground of the palace complex.
These gates are one of the pearls of the Catherine Palace and Park complex and are distinguished by the openwork and splendor of the Baroque lattice pattern with decorative details that have an abundance of gilding.
It is due to the presence of openwork decorative gilded elements in the Baroque style that the gate was called "Golden".
The gate was made in the middle of the 18th century (1748-1756) by the masters of the Sestroretsk plant according to the project of Savva Chevakinsky, and the golden details of the openwork pattern of the gate were made according to the drawings of Francesco Rastrelli.
During the Great Patriotic War, the Golden Gate was severely damaged. In the 1960s, they were restored. Subsequently, the restoration work of the gate was carried out.
Today, as many years ago, the Golden Gate still pleases the eyes of guests of the city of Pushkin. The gilding of the gates today is the details of the gates covered with the thinnest sheets of gold leaf according to the technology of the 19th century.
The Golden Gate has three and a half thousand decorative details and more than 12 thousand rivets. The gate is crowned with the small coat of arms of the Russian Empire.
On both sides, the gate is adjacent to the supporting parts of the fence, which is located on a low plinth and has a color scheme similar to the entire complex of the Catherine Palace. Learn more about the Catherine Palace…
The Golden Gate is part of the ensemble of the fence, which is made in the same style as the gate and is divided into sections by supports.
In turn, the fence connects the buildings of the circum-conferences of the palace complex, which frame the Parade Ground of the palace.
