A girl with a jug is a fountain located in the landscape part of the Catherine Park, in the former Tsarskoye Selo (now the city of Pushkin in St. Petersburg).
The fountain "Girl with a Jug" has other names: "Milkmaid", "Tsarskoye Selo statue" or "Peretta".
The fountain was built on an embankment, under which the waters of a local spring at the mouth of the park's canal are hidden.
The appearance of the fountain is associated with the improvement of a part of the park on the site of the former Katalnaya Mountain. Landscaping was started in 1808-1810, by order of Emperor Alexander I, under the direction of the garden master I. Bush and architect L. Ruska. Then the slope between the created A granite terrace and a large pond were decorated in the form of green ledges, paths were laid from the terrace to the pond, and the side part with a spring was later adapted for a fountain.
The fountain was designed by the engineer A. Betancourt and is a granite rock, which is a pedestal on which in 1816 was installed the sculpture "Girl with a jug", made by the sculptor P.P. Sokolov on the plot of the fable of J. Lafontaine "Milkmaid, or a Jug of milk". The sculpture was cast in bronze in the workshop of the Imperial Academy of Arts.
"The Girl with the Jug" was the only sculpture made specifically for the Catherine Park.
At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, the statue of the fountain, for safety, was buried in the ground; thanks to this, the fountain was not damaged.
Today in the Catherine Park there is a copy of the famous sculpture, cast in 1990, and the bronze original of the " Girl with a Jug "(the author's plaster model of which is stored in the museum The State Russian Museum) is placed in the funds of the museum-reserve "Tsarskoe Selo".
The sculpture represents a young girl sitting on a large boulder (the pedestal is a granite rock), dressed in a light summer dress and fixing her eyes on a broken jug lying at her feet. From the pitcher runs a stream of spring water, descending the steps of the fountain, and then along the channel into a Large pond.
Near the fountain, near a Large pond, there is a fragment of a bronze bas-relief of the Chesma column. The Chesma Column itself is located in a Large pond.
The column was damaged during the Great Patriotic War, and after its fragment was found at the bottom of the pond.
