The Column of Justice (Colonna della Giustizia) is a monumental column in Florence, which is the tallest among the city columns, and the upper part of which is decorated with a beautiful statue of Justice.
The Column of Justice is located in the historical center of Florence, on Piazza Santa Trinita, next to the Basilica of Santa Trinita and several palaces.
This powerful column of precious oriental granite (porphyry) comes from the natatio (monumental basin) of the Baths of Caracalla in Rome and is the last surviving whole column among the ruins of this thermal complex.
The column was donated by Pope Pius IV de' Medici from the Lombard branch of the family of Cosimo I de' Medici, the first Grand Duke of Florence. The column was delivered from Rome to Florence on a long journey in 1562-1563.
The monolithic column of Justice has a height of 11.17 meters and weighs about 50 tons. This makes the column the tallest in Florence, among the city columns.
In 1581, a statue of Justice (hence the name of the column) by the Italian sculptor Francesco del Tadda was added to the top of the column.
The bronze cloak that falls from the shoulders of the statue was not originally envisaged and was created only when the statue was finished, and to mask the defect in the proportions of the shoulders, which are very small compared to the torso of the sculpture.
In the left raised hand, the sculpture holds scales, the bowls of which are in a balanced balance, and in the right half-bent - a sword. This personifies Justice, and if one of the scales outweighs, then allegorically "Justice" will raise or lower his hand with a sword to accomplish justice (justice).
