Cagul Obelisk and Private Garden in Catherine Park, Tsarskoe Selo (Pushkin, Saint Petersburg)

The Cahul obelisk (Rumyantsev obelisk) and its Own garden are located close to each other and together represent an ensemble located near the southern facade of the Zubovsky wing Catherine Palace, in the landscape part of the Catherine Park of the former Tsarskoye Selo (now the city of Pushkin in St. Petersburg).

Cahul Obelisk

Russian Russian troops under the command of General Count P. A. Rumyantsev (hence the second name of the obelisk - "Rumyantsevsky") over the Turks in the battle of the Cahul River, during the Russo-Turkish War of 1768-1774.

The obelisk was built in 1771-1772 by the architect A. Rinaldi.

The obelisk is decorated in the forms of classicism. It is mounted on a three-stage stylobate located on a pedestal with a plinth. The pedestal of the obelisk has rectangular panels on four sides. In the northern panel there is a bronze plaque with a commemorative inscription: "In memory of the victory at the Cahul River in Moldavia, July 21, 1770, under the leadership of General Count Peter Rumyantsov, the Russian army of seventeen thousand put to flight the Turkish Vizier Galil Bey with a force of one and a half thousand".

The main part of the marble obelisk is a high needle-shaped column.

Private garden

Near the obelisk there is a so-called Private garden, which was made by order of Emperor Alexander II, in 1865-1886, by the architect A. F. Vidov.

The garden was intended for members of the royal family and the inner circle. It was and is located near the Zubovsky wing of the Catherine Palace, which then housed the private chambers of Alexander II, which was convenient for access to the garden.

The garden was separated from the rest of the park by an open verandah made in the Italian style - a pergola made of Bremen sandstone at the Peterhof lapidary Factory. This verandah can still be seen today.

The compositional center of the Private Garden is the "Vase" fountain with an octagonal pool with a high vase in the center, made of Carrara marble at the Peterhof lapidary Factory.

Around the fountain, flower beds are laid out, winding paths run, there are places to relax, sculptures are installed: "Ganymede", a Venetian work of the early 18th century, a copy of one of the" Dancers "by A. Canova and" Nymph " by P. P. Zabello, made in the 19th century.
